“It is necessary to distinguish the moment that what Latvia proposes – a 300% duty – is probably for those grains that would enter Latvia for processing and other things that would settle, simply put, in Latvia. At this point, we probably do not have a problem because Lithuania has banned any import of grains,” K. Mažeika told LRT radio on Tuesday.
“This is about transit grains, and the same 300% duty cannot be applied to transit grains, as they (the Latvians – BNS) try to claim. I think this is perhaps a public relations campaign or ignorance,” he added.

As BNS clarified, the minister’s representative Justas Jaskonis said that import duties do not apply to Russian and Belarusian grains transported in transit through the EU to third countries according to EU regulations.
