According to Turkish law, elections should normally be held in May of that year.

However, the country’s constitution allows the parliament to call early elections if at least 360 of the 600 members of the Turkish parliament agree.

Such a move would pave the way for R. T. Erdogan to seek another term.

R. T. Erdogan’s ruling Islamic conservative party AKP and its nationalist ally MHP control 326 seats in parliament.

The government has repeatedly emphasized that the elections will take place as scheduled.

R. T. Erdogan, who came to power in 2003 as prime minister, was elected president in 2014 after three terms as prime minister.

After Turkey transitioned to an executive presidential system, he was re-elected in 2018 and later in 2023.
