According to unofficial data, J. Šuklinas suddenly collapsed at his homestead on Thursday, later the medics who arrived tried to resuscitate him, but unsuccessfully.

Before his political career, he was a long-time Lithuanian canoeist, Olympic vice-champion who won silver at the 2012 London Olympics. However, later this title was taken away from him after it was recognized that the athlete used doping.

The athlete and politician was also a multiple winner and prize-winner of world and European championships.
J. Šuklinas served as a member of the Visaginas municipality council for a decade (2014-2024), and in 2023 he even became the acting mayor.
In 2022, the politician became a member of the Liberal Movement, and in 2024 he was elected to the Seimas.
