Kiev mayor Vitali Klitschko stated that during the nighttime bombing, which involved ballistic missiles and drones, eight people were killed and five were injured, including two children.
Oleksandr Percovskyi, head of the state railway operator Ukrzaliznytsia, said that a missile hit a railway depot and other railway facilities in Kiev.
“The ballistic strike took the lives of 7 people, 6 of whom were our employees,” he said, adding that another railway worker was hospitalized.
According to O. Percovskyi, the attack caused “significant destruction,” including the complete destruction of workshops, and fires are still burning in some places.
The Russian Ministry of Defense announced that its forces carried out a “massive strike” using long-range weapons and attack drones.
It stated that the attack targeted military industry as well as fuel and energy facilities in Kiev and its surroundings.
The ministry also claimed to have struck infrastructure in the southern Odessa region and the ports of Odessa and Chornomorsk.
“The Kiev region experienced a massive Russian missile and drone attack last night,” said Tymur Tkachenko, head of the Kiev regional military administration, on the Telegram platform.
According to the Ukrainian portal The Kyiv Independent, four people were killed and 13 injured in the Kiev region.
AFP journalists in the capital heard several loud explosions and saw flashes in the sky early Tuesday, shortly after the air forces warned of incoming ballistic missiles.
Ukraine’s military air forces warned that “the threat of ballistic weapons and other attack means to Kiev and the region remains” and urged residents to stay in shelters.
Ukrainian children return to schools on Tuesday, and the Kiev regional military administration warned that no large events should take place in high-risk zones.
In recent weeks, Kiev and its surroundings have been under constant pressure from Russian drone attacks, with jet drones increasing the threat and causing up to a dozen air raid alerts per day.
During a weekend attack on an ammunition depot in the capital’s suburbs, 38 people were killed.
Both sides have intensified long-range strikes in recent months, targeting infrastructure such as warehouses, business enterprises, oil and port facilities, as well as ships, thereby increasing civilian casualties.
Ukraine faces a shortage of missile interceptors, especially US-made Patriot systems used against ballistic threats.
