JAV ambassador called Kashmir part of India, Pakistan condemned it

“(A) strong demarche was presented regarding the factually incorrect remarks of the US ambassador to India about the status of Jammu and Kashmir,” the Pakistani Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement released Wednesday evening.

“It was emphasized that Jammu and Kashmir is an internationally recognized disputed territory,” the statement said.

Since 1947, when both countries gained independence from the United Kingdom (UK), the divided territory, where the majority of the population is Muslim, has been at the heart of fierce India-Pakistan confrontation.

US Ambassador in New Delhi Sergio Gore (Sergius Gore) said to journalists in Srinagar during a trip to Indian-administered Kashmir that “it is an important part of India.”

“We just had a very good meeting,” he added, referring to Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Minister Omar Abdullah. “We have some further matters, so we hope to bring them to Washington, to Delhi (…) and we hope to continue developing these relations.”

The latest neighbor conflict arose over Delhi’s decision to suspend its participation in the Indus Waters Treaty after a deadly attack on tourists in Indian-administered Kashmir in April 2025.

New Delhi accused Islamabad of supporting this attack, but Islamabad denies it.

Next month, intense drone, missile, and artillery strikes were carried out between the two countries, during which nearly 70 people died on both sides.
