The greatest insidiousness of this plant lies in its ability to “pretend.” Hemlock is very similar to harmless plants: its young leaves can look almost the same as parsley or savory, and the root can even mislead an experienced gardener – it smells like carrot or celery and has a slightly sweet taste.

However, behind the pleasant smell hides a deadly danger. The plant contains a strong neurotoxin – cytotoxin. It is important to know that no culinary processing methods – neither boiling nor drying – eliminate this toxin.
The doctor emphasizes that a very small amount can be enough for severe poisoning. The body’s reaction begins very quickly – just 5–10 minutes after ingestion.
The first dangerous symptoms:
- severe abdominal pain;
- uncontrollable vomiting;
- excessive salivation;
- severe diarrhea.
Experts strongly advise: if you are not completely sure that the plant is safe, never taste it or collect it for food.
