Is size more important for men or women?
There is probably no man who has not wondered if his penis is normal, if it is not too short, too thin. The question of penis size becomes a kind of symbol of masculinity for men, because it is not just about the body, but also about self-worth, self-confidence, and the fear of being an inadequate partner. Penis size often becomes a symbol of masculinity, sexual prowess, status, and self-worth for them.

For men, penis size is like a means of competition or pride. Men’s concern about penis size often stems not only from sexual need, but also from the desire to feel masculine, strong, and attractive enough. From adolescence, many men begin to compare themselves to others, because for a long time society created a myth that a larger sexual organ means greater masculinity, sexual prowess, or even higher status.
In many animal species, males compete for mating opportunities, so the desire to be superior to others has remained in the human psyche. Many men overestimate the penis size of other men, relying on misconceptions about “normal” penis size from pornography, conversations among friends, or social networks, which do not reflect the actual average penis size in a given population.
Many men overestimate the penis size of other men.
Paradoxically, scientific studies show that most men who worry about their penis size actually have perfectly normal penises. And there are many reasons for this.
First, men see their penis from above. This viewing angle visually shortens its length. In addition, people tend to compare themselves to exceptional cases, not to the average. Pornography also contributes greatly to a distorted perception of one’s body.
In the pornography industry, actors are usually chosen precisely for their exceptional anatomical features, and most importantly, a large penis. In addition, almost all pornographic films use special camera angles, wide-angle lenses, video editing, and additional tools that further enhance the impression of a large penis.
Paradoxically, penis size is not as important to women as it is to men themselves. When evaluating sexual satisfaction, they first mention emotional connection, communication, tenderness, partner’s attentiveness, and the ability to adapt to their needs.

Penis size usually remains much lower on this list of priorities. However, this does not mean that their partner’s penis size is completely unimportant to them. For some women, certain anatomical features can affect sensations during sexual intercourse, but the reality is much more complex than the impression created in popular culture.
What is a normal penis?
When it comes to the average male penis size, a wide variety of numbers can be found online. In some sources, the average penis length is 18 centimeters, in others – only 12 cm. Such cardinal differences usually arise because people participating in studies report their penis size themselves, rather than having it measured. It sounds strange, but a significant portion of men who worry about penis size do not even know their true penis size.
Some measure it from the abdominal skin, others from the testicles, and still others rely solely on visual impression. Before talking about size, it is important to understand how it should be measured at all. Often, the numbers provided online are inaccurate simply because people measure the penis in different ways. In medicine, a very clear rule applies. During an erection, a ruler is placed on the top side of the penis and pressed down to the pubic bone.

Penis length is measured during a full erection. The ruler is pressed against the top side of the penis down to the pubic bone. Since there is a layer of subcutaneous fat in the pubic area, the ruler is pressed down to the bone. A larger amount of abdominal fat can visually shorten the penis, as the fatty tissue above the pubic bone seems to cover part of the penis root and reduce its visible length. If the foreskin is longer, it is not included in the measurement.
Meanwhile, penis girth is measured with a flexible measuring tape. It is usually measured at the thickest part of the penis or in its middle part, and the circumference is determined in centimeters. It is important to understand that measuring from the abdominal skin, rather than from the pubic bone, can result in a difference of several centimeters. For obese men, due to a thicker fat layer, the penis may visually appear shorter, although its actual length does not differ from the norm. Simply reducing body weight sometimes gives the impression that the penis has become longer, although in reality, a larger part of it has simply become visible.
A large clinical study involving more than 15 thousand men showed that the average penis length during erection is about 13–14 centimeters, and the average girth is about 11.5–12 centimeters. This means that the absolute majority of men fall within a relatively narrow range of normal limits. In fact, very large or very small penises are much rarer than one might imagine from watching pornographic films. However, despite this, some men experience strong distress due to penis size, and this is called penile dysmorphia.
This problem is often not related to actual physical defects, but rather to a distorted self-perception and constant comparison with other men. Penile dysmorphia becomes a problem when thoughts about size begin to occupy a large part of the day, cause anxiety, shame, or reduce self-confidence. Some men, due to these experiences, avoid intimate relationships, are afraid to undress in front of their partner, refuse new acquaintances, or constantly seek confirmation that their body is normal.
Is length or girth more important for women?
So what do women think about? Interestingly, women participating in studies often report different preferred penis sizes depending on the nature of the relationship. For short-term relationships, they usually choose a slightly larger penis than for long-term ones.
Scientists believe that this is because in short-term relationships, women may focus more on sexual satisfaction, while in long-term relationships, emotional connection, trust, tenderness, the partner’s ability to communicate and care for the partner’s needs become much more important.
If they had to choose only one penis characteristic, most women would more often prefer greater girth over length. Why? The main reason for this is related to the anatomy of the female vagina. The highest concentration of nerve endings in the vagina is in the first 3–5 centimeters from the entrance. This area is rich in receptors that respond to stretching and pressure. A thicker penis can cause greater tissue stretching, thus enhancing the sensation of pleasure for some women.
Meanwhile, a very large length often has no additional benefit. The average vaginal length in a relaxed state is about 7–10 cm, and during sexual arousal, it lengthens to approximately 10–13 cm. Therefore, the penis length of most men during erection is completely sufficient to reach the upper part of the vagina. Moreover, an excessively long penis can cause discomfort or even pain for some women, especially in certain sexual positions when the cervix is irritated.
Thus, one of the biggest mistakes in sexual life is to assume that good sex depends on a single anatomical parameter. Sexual satisfaction is a complex phenomenon influenced by biological, psychological, and interpersonal relationship factors. This is especially important because a woman’s sexual satisfaction depends on many factors: hormone balance, emotional well-being, stress, relationship quality, mutual connection, previous sexual experience, and partner’s behavior. Penis size alone cannot compensate for these aspects.
