“There is not a single provision in this agreement that implies capitulation,” said M. Pezeshkian. “The Supreme Leader sets the policy, and we will follow that path.”
In June, an agreement signed by U.S. President Donald Trump, known as the memorandum of understanding, set an ambitious 60-day deadline to end the war with Iran and reach an agreement on its nuclear program.
This period ended this week, but both countries are still far from an agreement and there are no signs of compromise on the key issue – the opening of the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz for global shipping.
M. Pezeshkian also linked the agreement to Iran’s economic prospects, stating that the country cannot attract investment in this stalled phase.
“Capital and money are extremely sensitive to risk,” he said. “We must remove this risk from the country.”
Nearly six months after the start of the war with the U.S. and Israel, Iran’s economy suffers from sanctions and a naval blockade.
