“Yesterday, the French ambassador in Tehran was summoned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where it was emphasized that the French government must cease such actions and such interference in Iran’s internal affairs under misleading labels,” said ministry spokesman Esmaeilis Baqaei (Esmaeilis Bagajis) during a weekly press conference.
He stated that diplomats “interfered in Iran’s internal affairs under the guise of cooperation with civil society.”
According to E. Baqaei, their actions “are in no way justified under the 1961 Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations.”
On July 20, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot (Žanas Noelis Baro) stated that a day earlier, two French diplomats in Iran had been targeted by Iranian officials and subjected to “a very serious act of intimidation” by Iranian security services.
Both were “detained for several hours without reason, interrogated, and one of them suffered physical violence” before finally being able to return to the embassy, the minister said.
