Vilnius County Police recorded this accident at 13:25.
The accident occurred in the very center of the city, on Jogaila Street.
According to preliminary investigation data, an out-of-control Toyota Prius car drove onto the sidewalk and crashed into a bus stop. Two pedestrians were crushed and taken to the hospital.
Tomas Bražėnas, senior specialist of the Vilnius Police Communications Department, additionally informed 15min that officers have stopped all vehicle traffic. Restrictions will remain until the police collect evidence and repair crews clear the accident aftermath. Professional firefighters were also needed at the accident site.
According to the police representative, the causes of the accident are still unclear because the driver is in shock, making communication difficult for the officers.
Vilnius County Police representative T. Bražėnas told BNS that the injured were urgently taken to the hospital by ambulance. Officers do not yet know their ages or the severity of their injuries.
The police determined that the man (born in 1973) who lost control of the Toyota Prius is, according to preliminary data, completely sober.
BNS photojournalist Robertas Riabovas from the scene reported that, based on the police-determined vehicle trajectory and the damage caused, the driver clearly did not choose a safe speed.

“The bus stop structure was destroyed, and the car was severely damaged. According to the police-reconstructed scheme, the driver was coming from Gediminas Avenue, swerved into the oncoming lane, then drove onto the sidewalk and knocked over the bus stop with people,” the photojournalist explained.

Bus routes 1G, 53, and 88 and trolleybus routes 2, 3, 6, 12, and 20 are temporarily rerouted. Public transport is running via A. Goštauto St. – Pamėnkalnio St. – Pylimo St.
When planning trips, consider possible traffic changes and, if possible, choose alternative routes.”

The police, in turn, advise private vehicle drivers to choose another route for now.
