During the fire season (from April 1 to September 30; sometimes from March 15 to October 15), VMU foresters extinguish an average of 4 fires per week.
When the forest fire risk reaches class IV or higher, on some days VMU foresters extinguish more than 5 fires per day.
This year, as every year, most fires were caused by people’s careless behavior with fire: discarded unextinguished cigarette butts or matches, unattended campfires.

This year, the average area of a single forest fire is 0.50 ha.
By July 30, 92 forest fires occurred in the forests managed by VMU under trust rights, covering an area of 45.98 ha. Foresters went on more than 410 missions this year to search for possible forest fires.
In 2025, by July 30, foresters went on 244 missions to search for possible forest fires, while in 2024 during the same period – 175 times. By July 30, 2025, 97 forest fires occurred covering 40.20 ha, while in the same period in 2024, 59 forest fires occurred covering 28.25 ha.
