“The goal is to provide an alternative for passengers to choose a payment method when purchasing a single discounted ticket for Kaunas city public transport not only by buying it from the driver but also by using a contactless bank card via the vehicle’s electronic ticket validator,” the proposal states.

Currently, only a standard 1.5 euro ticket can be purchased with a contactless card at public transport validators. Tickets with 50% and 80% discounts can only be purchased from the driver.

“The aim is to reduce the burden on drivers selling tickets to passengers, increase the speed of public transport, and encourage Kaunas city residents, guests, and tourists to travel by transport more often,” the initiative’s authors indicate.

According to them, those wishing to buy discounted tickets via validators will have to enter their bank card details on the Kaunas public transport electronic ticket system’s self-service website, after which it will be linked to their account. The discount will apply when continuously purchasing tickets with the same bank card.

Discounted public transport tickets in Kaunas cost 75 cents (with a 50% discount) and 30 cents (80%).
