The “Padres” stated in a release that they are aware of O. Pirela’s detention and are trying to gather more information.
The U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the situation on Tuesday.
According to O. Pirela’s sister Daniela Pirela, her brother was detained on Sunday around 5 a.m. at the airport while on a work trip. The “Padres” minor league team “El Paso Chihuahuas” plays in this city, AP reports.

D. Pirela said that her brother has been living in the U.S. for 12 years and has complied with the laws. According to her, he applied for asylum in 2015 and now lives in Peoria, Arizona, with his wife and two children – aged 9 and 4. Both children are U.S. citizens.
Oswaldo Pirela briefly played for the “Texas Rangers” minor league team, where he played as a catcher.
