This decision was made after pressure from Prime Minister Péter Magyar, who called the prosecutor Orbán’s puppet.

Gábor Bálint Nagy stated in his announcement that he was resigning “only to protect the interests of the prosecutor’s office”.
“The activities and independence of the prosecutor’s office must under no circumstances be compromised by shameful, politically motivated struggles around the prosecutor general,” he said.
He also claimed that the “attacks directed at him crossed the boundaries of acceptable professional and public discourse”.
Since removing Orbán from power in the April elections, Magyar has managed to get rid of numerous high-ranking officials, including the unpopular former president Tamás Sulyok, who was removed on Sunday after a constitutional amendment was adopted.
Orbán’s Fidesz party condemned Magyar’s actions as “autocratic” – an accusation often leveled at the former prime minister himself during his tenure.
The chief prosecutor’s resignation was announced the day after a data center housing Fidesz servers was raided on suspicion of corruption.
G. B. Nagy was appointed for a nine-year term only last year, having previously served as chief of staff to his predecessor, Orbán’s ally Péter Polt.
Polt left the prosecutor’s office to become president of the Constitutional Court, but his term will end prematurely due to the same constitutional amendment that removed Sulyok.
The Prime Minister welcomed G. B. Nagy’s resignation.
“With this step, the country got rid of another Orbán puppet that hindered the transition to democracy,” Magyar wrote on Facebook.
