„Such incidents recently occurred in Northern Spain (Galicia), near the Estaca de Bares cape. Here, a group of orcas attacked the sailing yacht Idem. Losing rudder control, the vessel began to sink! Fortunately, a nearby boat managed to rescue two crew members, and the rescuers safely brought them back to the port.

However, this was not an isolated case. Between July 23-25, as many as 5 serious collisions between orcas and yachts were recorded on this coast! Due to this unexpected wave of “attacks,” the organizers had to cancel the traditional 53rd Rias Altas regatta.
This unusual behavior of the Pyrenean Peninsula orcas has been observed by scientists since 2020 (almost 700 such cases have been recorded in total!).
Interestingly, marine biologists and the International Whaling Commission emphasize: this is not aggression towards humans.
Orcas do not approach to harm or injure. According to scientists, this is a true “cultural phenomenon” or a juvenile… trend and play! Orcas approach from the stern of the boat, start pushing and biting the rudder blade. They play with the boat like a toy. However, for an animal weighing several tons, such “play” is just entertainment, but for the yacht – it means a broken rudder, a leaking hull, and a path to the bottom.

It is important to mention that this Pyrenean Peninsula orca population is endangered (fewer than 40 remain), so Spanish authorities officially call these events not “attacks,” but “interactions,” to avoid turning people against these animals.
Spanish authorities create maps of dangerous zones and recommend sailing vessels to avoid certain coastal areas. Previously, it was advised to turn off the engine and wait, but now it is recommended to sail towards the shore or shallows.
It is strictly forbidden to use firecrackers, harpoons, or other means to scare the animals – after all, this is a protected and endangered species, and the ocean is their home, and we are only guests in it, even if those visits sometimes cause considerable damage!“, wrote Angelina.
