The Order of Malta, or the Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of St. John, is a religious order of the Catholic Church that carries out a humanitarian mission. Its origins date back to 1048, when Christians visiting the Holy Land received permission to build a church, monastery, and hospital in Jerusalem, where they could care for arriving pilgrims.

The Order of Malta is a subject of international law with a special status. It is not a separate state, as it has no territory or population, nor is it an international organization, as it was not established by agreement between states and does not pursue economic or political goals. The Order of Malta has always been recognized as independent and neutral. Today, it carries out its humanitarian mission in more than 120 countries.
