„The Prosecutor’s Office notes that according to the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the obligation to notify the data subject about a personal data breach lies specifically with the data controller where such a breach occurred – in this case, the RC, and not the Prosecutor’s Office, which is leading the pre-trial investigation initiated regarding this incident,“ the Prosecutor’s Office wrote on its Facebook page on Thursday.

In turn, Mindaugas Sinkevičius, chairman of the ruling Lithuanian Social Democratic Party (LSDP), stated that prosecutors should have informed the public about the incident.

“Now it is being said that the Prime Minister and ministers did not inform. But the one who started the investigation, should they have informed the public or not?” the politician said to TV3 news on Wednesday.

The parliamentary opposition is initiating a parliamentary inquiry because of this. Depending on its results, it does not rule out raising the issue of political responsibility.

BNS wrote that the General Prosecutor’s Office is investigating possible illegal accesses and the appropriation of more than 600,000 real estate register entries, including people’s personal identification numbers.

According to law enforcement, the accesses were made from abroad by appropriating the accounts of Migration Department employees.
