“We have lost Vytautas Brazdylis.
With deep sadness, we announce the death of ballet artist, choreographer, ballet master, teacher, LNOBT soloist emeritus Vytautas Brazdylis (1947–2026).
We remember him as a prominent figure in Lithuanian ballet, who left a significant mark on our theatre and the country’s choreography history through his talent, creativity, and pedagogical work.
Having inherited his love for ballet from his father, also an artist of the Lithuanian Opera and Ballet Theatre, Vytautas Brazdylis Sr., he was a soloist at our theatre from 1966 to 1973. He danced Basilio in “Don Quixote,” Kunotas in “Audronė,” Albert in “Giselle,” the Composer in “Blue Danube,” and other memorable roles from the troupe’s repertoire at that time.
After completing choreography studies at the N. Rimsky-Korsakov Conservatory, V. Brazdylis debuted as a choreographer in 1978 and soon became the theatre’s ballet master. From 1980 to 1991, he served as the theatre’s chief ballet master. During this period, he created significant productions that contributed to the development of Lithuanian ballet – “Don Quixote,” “Jūratė and Kastytis,” “Forever Alive,” “Baltaragis’s Mill,” “Coppélia,” “Swan Lake,” “The Nutcracker.”
His pedagogical work was equally important. Teaching for many years at the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre and the National M.K. Čiurlionis School of Arts, he trained several generations of Lithuanian dancers and inspired many students and colleagues with his dedication to ballet art.
For his contributions to the theatre, in 2024 V. Brazdylis was awarded the honorary title of soloist emeritus of the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre.

V. Brazdylis was an exceptional figure in Lithuanian theatre and dance, who left a strong mark on the history of our performing arts with his talent, creative courage, and long-standing pedagogical work. His created performances, memorable roles, and dedication to ballet art became an important part of Lithuanian theatre culture.
His work in nurturing young artists was no less important. Teaching for many years at the Ballet Department of the National M.K. Čiurlionis School of Arts and the Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre, he inspired several generations of dancers. In the memory of students and colleagues, he remains a wise, creative, sincere, and respected Teacher.

The farewell with Vytautas will take place at the Funeral Services Center Antakalnis branch, M. K. Paco St. 4, Vilnius, in hall 2:
• July 20, Monday, 15:00–21:00;
• July 21, Tuesday, 9:00–13:30.
He will be buried at the Antakalnis Cemetery Artists’ Hill.
