Firefighters, while extinguishing a fire on a farm plot in the Eboli municipality, in the southern Campania region, discovered a body that was later identified as Luigi Esposito, Salerno prosecutor Raffaele Cantone wrote in a press release.

“The preliminary results of the investigation indicate that the incident is likely related to a murder,” R. Cantone wrote.
The Italian National Union of Journalists confirmed that the 53-year-old man was a registered journalist who covered sports events in various local media as a commentator and editor.
The union’s statement noted that he also worked at a regional environmental agency.

“It appears that he was killed by gunshots (…), and then set on fire,” the union wrote.
National Union president Carlo Bartoli said that the investigation results are awaited “to understand the context in which the brutal murder of our colleague occurred.”
