The CJEU ruled on Thursday that the EU or one of its member states cannot impose sanctions on an EU company solely because it is indirectly owned by the Russian state, according to a court statement.

“The control exercised by the person subject to EU restrictive measures over the company must be based on objective and sufficiently solid evidence. The autocratic nature of the Russian political regime in itself is not sufficiently solid evidence to justify that the Russian president controls the company,” the CJEU statement reads.
