“The Emergency Situations Operations Center met on Monday and decided to declare a state of emergency. Returning yesterday from Prienai, today I signed the order declaring a state of emergency,” Biržai district municipality mayor Kęstutis Knizikevičius told BNS on Tuesday.

According to him, about 1,200 consumers in the municipality’s territory still did not have electricity supply on Tuesday, while over the weekend there were about 5,000 such consumers.
“The largest settlements do not have water. We are trying to solve this problem either with generators or water tanks will be delivered so that residents simply have water, but we are solving most of it with generators. We are opening elderships so that residents can at least charge communication devices – phones or tablets, computers,” the mayor said.
According to him, there are no longer any impassable roads or cut-off areas in the district.
According to K. Knizikevičius, the main problem is electrical faults, broken lines. The situation is complicated by the fact that part of the high-voltage line faults are on the Latvian side.
“Some residents do not have electricity due to accidents on the Latvian side. At least three out of four high-voltage lines where there are accidents, if I am not mistaken, are on the Latvian side,” he said.
The mayor of Biržai said he sent a letter to the Government requesting soldiers to help eliminate the consequences of the storm.
According to him, the help of the army would allow dangerous trees to be cleared faster, freeing up power lines.
On Monday, Kazlų Rūda and Anykščiai declared a state of emergency in their municipalities due to the consequences of the storm. The Government decided not to declare a state of emergency at the national level for now.
