Donald Trump says he is currently making a final decision on the agreement with Iran

„Now I will have a meeting in the Situation Room to make the final decision,“ D. Trump wrote in a long post on social media, emphasizing that Iran must agree never to have nuclear weapons and to open the Strait of Hormuz.

In his post, D. Trump noted that Iran will “immediately complete” the removal of mines from the strait and that the US military blockade of Iranian ports “will now be lifted” so that oil and other tankers can start sailing.

However, it is unclear whether Iran agreed to this and whether the US blockade was actually lifted before D. Trump made the decision.

D. Trump also clarified that Iran’s enriched uranium stocks “will be excavated by the United States (…) in close cooperation with the Islamic Republic of Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency and will be DESTROYED.”

Following reports that Iran demands financial compensation for the war and that the White House raised the idea of investments, D. Trump noted that “no money will be exchanged unless otherwise notified.”

The US president added that “(on this issue) only much less important matters” have been agreed upon.

On Thursday, it was announced that US and Iranian negotiators agreed to extend the ceasefire for 60 days, but this still needs to be approved by President D. Trump.

Sources confirmed reports by the news portal “Axios” that both sides agreed on a memorandum of understanding aimed at extending the ceasefire and starting negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program.

As reported by “Axios,” the 60-day agreement will provide that shipping through the Strait of Hormuz will be unrestricted, without any fees or harassment, and Iran will have 30 days to remove all mines.

In exchange, the US will lift the naval blockade of Iranian ports, but only proportionally to the restoration of commercial shipping, the report states.

The memorandum will also include Iran’s commitment not to pursue nuclear weapons, “Axios” indicated. One of the first issues to be resolved is how to destroy Iran’s enriched uranium stocks.

US Vice President J. D. Vance later spoke on Thursday about progress in negotiations with Iran.

“We are still discussing several formulations. We have made great progress in this area,” he said.

J. D. Vance said that the Iranians have participated in the negotiations “at least honestly so far” and both sides want to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, but there is still no agreement on Iran’s enriched uranium stocks.

“We hope to continue making progress and that the president will be able to approve the agreement, but obviously, that is still awaited,” he added.

D. Trump has repeatedly emphasized that Iran cannot have nuclear weapons under any agreement aimed at ending the war that the US and Israel started on February 28. Fragile ceasefire has been in effect since April 8.
