He accused 45-year-old Meghan of being “terribly disrespectful” to the late Queen Elizabeth II. This was his first reaction after the prince and his American wife from California returned to the United Kingdom (UK).
The famous couple is now settling in Harry’s homeland – six years after they gave up royal duties and left for the US due to major disagreements with the family.
“I’m glad about it. I was not a fan of theirs,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office when asked what he thought about Harry and Meghan’s departure.
“I thought they treated the royal family very disrespectfully. I didn’t like it. I didn’t like how she behaved. I thought she was terribly disrespectful to the queen, to King Charles (III),” Trump said.
It seems that 41-year-old Harry has improved relations with his father King Charles III, who is battling cancer, during recent visits to the UK.
Harry is reportedly still not on speaking terms with his brother and heir to the throne Prince William and his wife Catherine.
Trump said he would not have been so forgiving.
“Maybe I’m different. I wouldn’t have taken him back, right? If I were the royal family, I wouldn’t have taken them back,” Trump said.
The 80-year-old president, a former reality show star, has previously exchanged sharp remarks with Meghan several times.
In 2019, during his first term, on the eve of a state visit to the UK, Trump denied calling Meghan ugly, although it was clearly heard in a recording of an interview given to a tabloid.
She, in turn, criticized Trump during the 2016 presidential campaign, calling him a misogynist and a divisive politician.
It seemed that Trump was offended again by Meghan’s comments before the 2020 election, which he lost, saying he “is not a fan.”
“I wish Harry great success because he will need it,” Trump added at the time.
Royal conflict
Harry and Meghan returned to the UK with their children, 7-year-old Prince Archie and 5-year-old Princess Lilibet.
The couple married in a lavish wedding in 2018, but after two years, following a conflict with the British royal family, they gave up royal duties and moved to North America.
The rift widened further when Harry released his memoir “Spare” and when the couple gave an open interview to US talk show host Oprah Winfrey.
Mixed-race Meghan and Harry implied in that interview that the British royal family is racist, claiming that one family member raised concerns about their son’s skin color before he was born.
Meghan also said that upon joining the royal family, she contemplated suicide.
Although the couple signed a series of commercial contracts with US platforms such as Netflix and Spotify, it is reported that their attempts to earn money in the US were unsuccessful.
Their return to the UK has raised many questions.
The Telegraph reported that the couple plans to stay “for a longer time” and live in the central Cotswolds region of England, where they enrolled their children in school for this academic year.
However, amid rumors about the reasons for their return and whether they will stay permanently, reports note that the couple intends to keep their homes in California and Portugal.
Meghan faces a particularly tough challenge readjusting to life in the UK, where she remains unpopular. Polls show that most people view both her and, to a lesser extent, Harry unfavorably.
