The winner of the competition was the two-time European and Diamond League champion and once world champion Slovenian Kristjan Čeh, who threw the discus 72.56 m with his best – second – attempt.
The Slovenian also surpassed the 70 m mark in Vingis Park with his first (70.04) and sixth (70.19) throws.
World record holder Mykolas Alekna took second place. The best result recorded by the Lithuanian was 69.30 m. He achieved it on his third attempt.
Olympic champion Jamaican Fedrick Dacres settled for third place. His best result in Vilnius was 67.11 m.
Today, the competition also featured Martynas Alekna (best result – 59.18 m; 6th place) and this year’s European Athletics Championships discus throw finalists from the Netherlands Shaquille Emanuelson (65.67 m; 4th place) and Ruben Rolvinikas (62.54 m; 5th place).
The athletes competed in the Lithuanian capital for a prize fund of 10,000 euros.
The competition in Vilnius was symbolically opened today with throws by two Lithuanian discus throw legends – the first Olympic champion of independent Lithuania Romas Ubartas and two-time Olympic, world, and European champion Virgilijus Alekna.
It was V. Alekna who held the Vingis Park stadium record (70.01 m) until today. It was improved on the very first throw by K. Čeh, who recorded 70.04 m.
The brightest stars of the world discus throw returned to Vilnius after a twenty-year break. In 2005–2006, thousands of people flocked to Vingis Park to watch V. Alekna’s battles with his main competitor, Estonian Gerd Kanter.
