Last week FIFA presented a private investment plan. It was claimed that up to 4.2 billion USD in private investments could be attracted if the planned subsidiary commercial company FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) was valued at 20 billion USD.
If the project had been approved, each of the 211 FIFA member associations could have received a one-time payment of 20 million USD at the beginning of 2027, and their funding allocations for the 2027–2030 cycle would have increased from 8 million to 20 million USD.
According to the proposal, private investors could acquire company shares but would remain minority shareholders.
However, this plan sparked fierce opposition, and UEFA took extreme measures – threatening to boycott the most important event in this sport – the World Cup.
On Saturday, FIFA chief Gianni Infantino admitted the mistake and canceled the plan.
