Witnesses initially noticed that the girl, identified only as Alice from Milan, was underwater. When they tried to pull the child out, it turned out that she was difficult to free from the pool drain.
According to “La Sicilia” and “The Sun,” paramedics at the scene tried to resuscitate Alice. In critical condition, she was airlifted by helicopter to the Gaslini children’s hospital in Genoa, where she later died.
The hospital stated to “La Sicilia”: “The entire hospital is with the family in this moment of unimaginable pain and expresses deep gratitude for the choice that can turn an irreparable void into concrete hope for other families.”
After the tragedy, Italy’s Civil Protection and Maritime Policy Minister Nello Musumeci called for strengthening pool safety.
“The death of Alice, an 11-year-old girl who was caught in a pool drain in Sestri Levante, shows a necessity that can no longer be postponed – ensuring the safety of public and private pools in Italy,” he said, according to “La Sicilia.”

N. Musumeci added that the girl’s death occurred after four other minors died under similar circumstances in pools in the region.
“Strict regulation is needed, but also greater caution – children should never be left alone in the water,” said a local official. “The Meloni government’s bill for this purpose will be approved by the competent committee later this month, and we will do everything to have it considered urgently.”
The police are investigating the girl’s death as a possible involuntary manslaughter, reports “The Sun.” So far, no one has been detained.
Deputy prosecutor of the Genoa court Fabrizio Givri ordered an autopsy of Alice’s body, reports “Sky TG24.”
