The resolution submitted by Togo, supported by the African Union, was approved on Friday by 164 UN members. The only country to vote against was the United States, while six other countries abstained – Ukraine, Moldova, Serbia, Georgia, Estonia, and Lithuania.

Although the resolution states that the new map, known as the Equal Earth projection, improves the “accuracy of the world cartographic representation” compared to the previously used Mercator projection, which distorted the proportions of world regions – for example, North America and Greenland are shown much larger, while Africa and South America are reduced.
Ukraine expressed its protest over the weekend and explained its reasons – K. Budrys explained to 15min that the arguments mentioned by Kyiv were also the reason for Lithuania’s vote.
