City flower beds are designed so that blooming continues throughout the season. In spring, city spaces are decorated with tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths, while in summer, the colors are taken over by perennials, whose blooming lasts until autumn.

Each green area – in the city center, street, or square – has its own characteristics and challenges. Therefore, the most suitable plants and their maintenance solutions are selected for each location.
Most often, city flower beds are dominated by perennials resistant to urban conditions – sages, asters, echinaceas, redroot, and thymes. In shadier places, cornflowers, astrantias, and hakonechloa are planted.
The flower beds on Nemunas Island stand out for their exceptional plant diversity. They combine both herbaceous plants and ornamental shrubs.
The blooming season here begins with tulips and irises, later taken over by sages, yarrow, echinaceas, campanulas, seslerias, knapweeds, starflowers, and asters. Solitary plants – elderberry, jasmine, and Lamarck’s medlar – also become accents in the flower beds.
“All city landscaping solutions are designed maintaining a unified concept of Kaunas green spaces, but at the same time adapting to the specific characteristics of the place and architectural solutions. Different city spaces dictate not only the types of plants but also their color range and abundance of flowers.
In a modern urban environment, plants help visually soften the space but do not overshadow the architecture – the most important thing is to maintain a harmonious balance,” said Radeta Savickienė, head of the Environmental Protection Department of Kaunas City Municipality.

The locations of flower beds are determined not only by implemented projects but also by the desire to expand, renew, and supplement the city’s green zones. It is important to observe how the city changes, adapt to its rhythm, and create an aesthetic, inclusive, and vibrant environment.
“A successful flower bed is one that stops a passerby at least for a moment and allows them to enjoy the beauty created by the city,” emphasizes R. Savickienė.
Plants designated for Kaunas flower beds are selected according to established quality requirements. They are supplied by the company that won the tender, which has a specialized nursery where seedlings are grown under Lithuanian climate conditions, so they are better adapted to the local environment.
New flower beds appear in the city not only by implementing various projects but also by aiming to expand green spaces, renew them, and adapt them to the needs of a modern city.
Green spaces in Kaunas will continue to increase. One of the nearest newly renovated spaces, where more greenery will appear, is A. Juozapavičius Square.
