“Greening in Vilnius is progressing steadily – in spring we planted more than 2700 trees, and in autumn nearly another thousand. It is important not only the total number but also that greenery appears where it is most needed – near streets, in residential areas, and in renovated public spaces,” says Gintautas Runovičius, head of the City Environment Department of Vilnius City Municipality.
Some greenery will be planted together with ongoing street renovation works. On Švitrigailos Street, 25 trees, more than 2100 shrubs, and 2300 herbaceous plants are planned to be planted. On the Panerių St.–Kauno St. section, 13 trees will be planted and 273 sq. m of shrub greenery installed; on the A.Vivulskio St.–J.Basanavičiaus St. section – 12 trees and 278 sq. m of shrubs. New shrub and herbaceous plant greenery will also be installed on the sections of Naugarduko, T.Ševčenkos, and A.Vivulskio streets.
Three planting volunteer events are planned for autumn, to which residents will be invited. In the planned urban forest at Justiniškių St. 50–52, 270 trees and 312 shrubs will be planted; at Baltrušaičio St. 79D – 326 trees and 352 shrubs. A volunteer event will also take place on Medeinos Street – 38 trees and 939 shrubs are planned to be planted there.
