This year, aquatic vegetation will be removed from a more than six-kilometer section of the Nevėžis River – from Vakarinė Street to J. Biliūnas Street. Currently, a special amphibious aquatic vegetation cutter is working in the section between Smėlynė and Respublikos Street bridges, and later the work will move to other designated river sections.

Nevėžis maintenance has been carried out consistently for several years. The cutting of aquatic plants – macrophytes – began in 2015, and since 2019, the entire riverbed within the city territory has been regularly maintained. Aquatic plants are cut to a depth of one meter – this helps to slow down their regrowth, so there is less and less excess vegetation in the river. Long-term practice shows that consistent maintenance yields results – the amount of aquatic plants in Nevėžis noticeably decreases every year.
River maintenance work is carried out by UAB „Mobarn-Lt“, a company that won the public tender of Panevėžys City Municipality. The cut vegetation is temporarily moved to the shore, where it naturally dries out, and is then transported away.
Aquatic vegetation cutting works are planned annually in compliance with environmental requirements. From March 1st to July 1st, riverbed cleaning is not carried out to protect fish spawning. After this period, work begins immediately to ensure it is completed by the end of summer.
