“The requirements for zoos are not a formality – they are designed to ensure animal welfare and visitor safety. The Klaipėda Zoo has repeatedly been given deadlines to rectify violations, but this has not been done. If, after an inspection, it becomes clear that the requirements are still not being met, we will not hesitate to apply the measures provided for in legal acts,” says Eglė Paužuolienė, acting Director of the Environmental Protection Department.

On July 2, 2025, an inspection of the Klaipėda Zoo was carried out, and it was determined that, despite previous warnings and repeatedly extended deadlines for fulfilling requirements, the violations had not been rectified.
Having evaluated the inspection results, the AAD on July 23, 2025, decided to prohibit the Klaipėda Zoo from admitting visitors until July 23, 2026, or until the identified violations are rectified and all requirements are met.

If, after the inspection started today, it is determined that the violations have not been rectified, the ban on admitting visitors to the Klaipėda Zoo will remain in effect. A decision will also be made regarding the closure of part of the zoo or the revocation of the Zoo’s permit and the closure of its operations. The aim is to ensure animal welfare and that they are kept in suitable conditions.
Upon revocation of the zoo’s permit, the former permit holder will be required to close the zoo within a specified period, which cannot exceed 8 months from the date of permit revocation.
