The Lithuanian reported on March 24 that he had undergone chest surgery.
“Life slowed me down for a moment. Last week, my chest muscle completely tore. Many thanks to Dr. James Voos, who urgently performed the necessary surgery on me. Many thanks to the entire Oregon team who helped me find the best surgeon in the country. I will come back stronger,” wrote 23-year-old M. Alekna.

After the surgery, the athlete’s coach Mantas Jusis said that “he will return to normal training after 4–5 months.”
It is now officially announced that the Lithuanian will compete in the Diamond League stage in Eugene (United States, USA) on July 4. This news was shared by both the organizers and M. Alekna.

This year, the most important event for Lithuanian track and field athletes will be the European Championship held in mid-August in Birmingham (England), which will take place from August 10–16.
