It is responsible for the burning taste of the spice, appreciated in cooking, but for some animals and insects, it is a strong irritant, explained certified entomologist Brendon Ranjon, who has 20 years of pest control experience.
According to him, this effect can spread to mice, squirrels, aphids, ants, and other pests. For ants, capsaicin masks the scent trails they leave behind, and for aphids and other piercing-sucking insects, it acts as a strong irritant. In some cases, this substance can even damage the cell membranes of insects.
What are the drawbacks of this method?
Although cayenne peppers can be a useful tool in pest control, this method has certain drawbacks. The main problem is the short-term effect.
For example, after rain, the peppers simply wash away, so the procedure needs to be repeated. For this reason, those who do not have time to regularly renew protection should consider other pest control methods.

As an alternative, B. Ranjon advises using strong-smelling plants that can act as natural repellents:
“Other plants can be used as deterrents, such as lemongrass, mint, rosemary, and lavender. All strongly aromatic agents will weaken the sensory abilities of insects,” he explained. According to the expert, combining such plants in the garden can greatly help repel certain pests.
How to properly use cayenne peppers in the garden?
If you want to try this method, cayenne peppers should be sprinkled in dry areas around plants that attract unwanted guests the most. Special attention should be paid to the root zone of the plants and the boundaries of the garden plot.
You can also prepare a special spray: mix 1–2 tablespoons of cayenne pepper with about 3.8 liters of water and spray the plants. Such a solution will help protect flowers, shrubs, and other greenery.
