Arriving in Kaunas, the forward spoke in his first interview about the desire to earn his place, a championship mentality, and the coach Željko Sopić who helped him make the decision.
“I am very happy to have the opportunity to come to Lithuania and join this club. I hope to help the team with my play and goals. The coach called me and gave me this opportunity – for that I am very grateful. I am ready to compete for minutes on the pitch – in every team you have to earn that,” said G. Debeljuh.
The Croatian also described his playing style and the start of his career in Italy.
“I am a forward who likes to play near the 16-meter line. I can keep the ball and help the team. When I was just 16 years old, I went to play in Italy. It was a difficult period because it was the first time I was so far from home. Everything was new, but I learned a lot,” added G. Debeljuh.
The new Žalgiris player also spoke about the championship mentality and later shared his experience playing in the group stages of European tournaments.
“Playing in a European tournament is very different from national championships – the intensity is on a completely different level, and the players are also better. Football here is on another level, but you don’t have to be afraid of any opponents. When I saw that Kauno Žalgiris would play at least in the Conference League group stage, the decision to come here was not difficult,” revealed G. Debeljuh.
