The new sculpture depicts two soldiers who died in September 2023 in Russia’s war against Ukraine. Local authorities announced plans to build a new monument in May.

In June 2023, a plaque with the names of Lithuanians and Poles deported to Siberia was removed from the original memorial. After a few months, the entire monument was dismantled.
