Mandatory military service can be completed in parts: you can still join

One of such changes is that this year, for the first time, it is possible to complete the compulsory initial military service (PPKT) in parts, each lasting 90–120 days, over 3 years. On November 30 of this year, a new group of soldiers who have chosen this method of service will begin their service, and those who wish to join can still do so.

The essence of the new model is the possibility to acquire military training more flexibly, performing the service in stages and combining it with civilian life. Soldiers arrive at the military unit at a set time, participate in a specific training stage, and after completing it, return to their usual daily life. Later, they are invited to continue service in other training stages. The entire established training program can be completed in parts over a period not exceeding three years, and on average, soldiers spend about five weeks per year in service.

This method of service can be chosen by university students and graduates, as well as conscripts who sought to postpone the nine-month compulsory initial military service, which, considering the circumstances, was not postponed for them but they were offered to complete PPKT in this way.

This model of service organization provides more opportunities to combine military training with studies, professional activities, and other commitments. At the same time, the main goal is maintained – to provide soldiers with the necessary military knowledge and practical skills and prepare them to contribute to Lithuania’s defense.

Conscripts performing PPKT in this way are provided with clothing, food, and service accommodation (on service days), and they are also paid the allowances established for compulsory initial military service soldiers for household expenses (340.2 Eur per month, the specific amount depends on the number of days served in the respective month), travel expenses are reimbursed each time they are called to the service location and back to their place of residence.

During the first stage of service, soldiers get acquainted with the military environment, principles of service organization, internal regulations, and daily schedule of the military unit. They are provided with the necessary equipment, meet their direct commanders, and begin military training. This stage focuses heavily on adaptation and basic knowledge and skills, which form the foundation for further training.

Continuing service in subsequent stages, soldiers gradually deepen the acquired knowledge and practical abilities. They learn disciplines necessary for a soldier, how to act individually and in a team, develop military discipline, responsibility, and the ability to carry out assigned tasks. Depending on the training program, soldiers acquire basic military readiness or are trained according to specific military specialties required by the Lithuanian Armed Forces.

After completing the entire established training program, soldiers will join the active reserve of the Lithuanian Armed Forces, where they will maintain and improve the acquired military knowledge and practical skills. Those wishing to continue service in the Lithuanian Armed Forces will be able to choose other methods of military service.

Those wishing to choose the 90–120 day compulsory initial military service and join the group starting service on November 30 are invited to contact the nearest regional military commandant’s office.
