At Vilnius airport, border guards detained a Kenyan citizen who was preparing to fly to Catania (Sicily, Italy). Having applied for asylum but fleeing from Latvia without waiting for it, he presented VSAT officers with a forged identity card, suspected to be Norwegian. A pre-trial investigation has been launched, and the illegal migrant has been detained for a month.

The man pretended to be a 27-year-old Norwegian, but border guards found a Latvian asylum seeker certificate issued to a 24-year-old man from Kenya.
On Tuesday night, VSAT Vilnius border unit officers working at the capital’s airport noticed a foreigner in the departure hall near the boarding gate for the flight to Catania and decided to check him. The foreigner presented a Norwegian identity card issued to a 27-year-old man.
The border guards suspected that the document did not belong to the presenter. The passenger was escorted to the border control point’s service premises.
During additional checks, VSAT officers determined that the presented Norwegian document was forged. The man had a digital boarding pass issued under the same name on his mobile phone.

During the inspection, border guards found a Latvian asylum seeker certificate issued to a 24-year-old citizen of Kenya, a country in East Africa. The foreigner admitted to fleeing from the asylum seekers’ accommodation center in Latvia.
The foreigner was detained and placed in custody.
A pre-trial investigation has been launched at the VSAT Vilnius border unit for document forgery or possession of such a document, led by a prosecutor from the 1st division of the Vilnius District Prosecutor’s Office of the Vilnius Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
For such a criminal offense, the law provides for a fine, restriction of liberty, arrest, or imprisonment for up to four years.
On Thursday, the court imposed a preventive measure on the Kenyan citizen – detention for one month.
