Gardener's mistake costing the harvest: specialists warn which plants should not be pruned in autumn

Summer raspberries are pruned when old shoots remain on the bush after picking the berries. All two-year-old branches that no longer bear fruit are cut off close to the ground – stumps should not be left. Young green shoots are preserved because they will bear fruit next year. Thinning the bush in September improves air circulation and reduces the risk of fungal diseases.

Weak, unripe shoots and excess green mass that do not participate in fruiting are removed from grapevines. This way, the plant does not waste resources on “empty” shoots and can devote more energy to the clusters, and it also prepares more easily for frost. Suckers and thin branches that overly thicken the bush can also be removed, but the main shaping pruning is done only after the leaves fall – in September, only sanitary pruning is discussed.

Wisteria is pruned for a different reason – to encourage flowering. Long shoots are shortened to 5–6 buds from the main stem. After such pruning, the plant actively forms flower buds and blooms more abundantly in spring and summer.

Currants and gooseberries: why September may be too early

The habit of pruning fruit bushes in autumn is not bad in itself, but it is very important to choose the right time. Pruning too early can harm the bush: it may prepare poorly for winter or not survive it at all, and the yield next season may be significantly lower.

Currants and gooseberries can only be pruned after the leaves have fallen, that is, at the end of September or in October. At that time, old branches over 4–5 years old that have already fruited are removed, as well as damaged, diseased, and branches growing too close to the ground. Young green shoots are left.

Better not to touch fruit trees

Apple, pear, cherry, sour cherry, plum, and apricot trees should not be pruned in autumn – it is better to postpone these tasks to March–April, before active sap flow begins. Even completely fallen leaves are not a sign that it is time to take the pruner.

Exception – sanitary pruning. Dry, diseased, or broken branches can be removed in September. However, larger cuts, especially on mature trees, are better left for early spring.

Horticulture specialists associate this with the dormancy period that trees gradually enter in autumn. The plant accumulates substances necessary for wintering, and a large part of them enters the plant tissues through the leaves already in summer.

Pruning too early can disrupt this process and sometimes even stimulate the growth of new shoots. Frost in winter can damage their buds, which would seriously weaken the tree.
