Before the tragedy, 36-year-old L. Clancy was an obstetric nurse – she worked for nine years at a hospital in Boston. Together with her husband Patrick, she raised three children. Relatives and former colleagues described her as a caring and devoted mother. However, after the birth of her third child in May 2022, her mental health began to rapidly deteriorate.
This case attracted exceptional public attention not only because of the tragic death of the children. It sparked widespread discussions about postpartum psychosis, women’s mental health, and whether the healthcare system is capable of timely recognizing when a person needs urgent help.
During the trial, rallies supporting L. Clancy were held outside the courthouse. More than 300 people, mostly women, gathered at one of them. They wore pink clothes and held signs reading “Believe” and “She Needed Help.” The rally participants said they supported not what L. Clancy did, but wanted to draw attention to mothers’ mental health and the lack of support.
The trial began on July 27 and lasted nearly six weeks. More than 80 witnesses testified. Ultimately, 12 jurors had to decide whether L. Clancy understood her actions during the crime and could be held responsible for them. They deliberated for seven days – more than 38 hours. However, the jurors were unable to reach a unanimous decision, so the judge declared the case ended without a verdict.
Not necessarily the end
However, this does not necessarily mean the end of the case. L. Clancy remains charged with the murder of her three children and is being treated in a psychiatric hospital. The prosecution may request a retrial, but other scenarios are also possible. The next court hearing is scheduled for September 29, when it may become clear what further actions the prosecutors will take.

Ex-husband acknowledged – L. Clancy was a wonderful mother
L. Clancy’s ex-husband, 36-year-old Patrick Clancy, became one of the key witnesses in court. He spoke about his wife’s deteriorating mental health leading up to the fateful January 24, 2023. On that day, Patrick briefly left home to go to the store. While he was away, Lindsay killed their three children – five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson, and eight-month-old Callan. Later, she attempted suicide herself, and due to the injuries sustained, L. Clancy was left paralyzed from the waist down.
Patrick described his wife as a “very devoted” mother who struggled with mental health issues and “had a very hard time being separated from the children.”
In court, the man testified that about two months before the tragedy, his wife told him about thoughts of harming the children and that something bad might happen to them. However, despite these thoughts, he believed his wife had no concrete plan to harm them and did not think she should be separated from the children.
“It was a very confusing period because after such confessions, she would prepare lunch for them within a few minutes, play with them, get ready to put them to sleep, or do something similar,” he said. According to Patrick, his wife showed him “no intention” to harm the children.
He also said that in December 2022, L. Clancy began talking about suicide.
Those around noticed the woman’s condition worsening
L. Clancy’s mother and sister also testified in court about her increasingly deteriorating mental health before the tragedy. They mentioned that the woman confided in them about growing paranoia, insomnia, and thoughts of suicide.
L. Clancy’s mother, Paula Musgrove, said that in the fall of 2022, her daughter became increasingly paranoid. She was afraid to sleep alone and believed that the medications she was taking “were destroying her mind.”
In December 2022, according to her mother, L. Clancy first told her husband that she had thoughts of harming the children.
The court was also shown a message L. Clancy sent to her mother. In it, she wrote that “she feels very bad, couldn’t sleep all night, and is afraid to be alone.”

L. Clancy’s sister Allison Ozga also spoke about her sister’s worsening condition. According to her, by December the woman’s condition had significantly deteriorated. The sister recalled that at the end of the year, L. Clancy told her she had been thinking about suicide daily for a month.
L. Clancy’s former mother-in-law, Susan Clancy, also said in court that as the woman’s condition worsened, she “begged for help.”
She also confirmed that in December 2022, Patrick (the woman’s husband) took L. Clancy to a hospital on Rhode Island for treatment, and later he went skiing himself.
She begged for help but did not receive it
L. Clancy and her ex-husband Patrick have filed several civil lawsuits against the doctors and hospitals where the woman was treated. She accuses the medical staff of negligence and improper treatment, while Patrick seeks compensation for the children’s deaths.
L. Clancy’s lawsuit states that the doctors failed to properly diagnose her postpartum bipolar disorder and instead prescribed many different medications. According to the lawsuit and the experts involved, such uncoordinated treatment further worsened her condition and caused a severe psychotic episode.
The spouse’s lawsuit also claims that improperly prescribed medications and insufficient monitoring of L. Clancy’s condition led to further deterioration of her mental health, suicidal thoughts, and the need for hospital treatment.
The lawsuit states that the failure of the medical staff to recognize and properly respond to the rapidly worsening mental state of the woman ultimately led to the tragedy – she allegedly took the lives of her children.
Lindsay’s personal notes were quoted in court. On November 18, 2022, she wrote that she desperately longed for a physical illness that would explain how she felt. The woman complained of severe “brain fog,” insomnia, loss of appetite, and feeling unable to cope with the challenges of motherhood.
“I live from one moment to the next… I am terribly afraid that Cal will get exhausted because I feel I can’t help him,” she wrote.
In one entry, she openly admitted: “I want to die. I want help. I want to get better.”
