Only the six best participants of this season’s “Diamond League” competed in the discus throw final in Brussels, and 23-year-old M. Alekna recorded a result of 70.14 m.
The winner was 27-year-old Slovenian Kristjan Čeh – 71.29 m, also improving the competition record.
He also beat M. Alekna at the European Championships in Birmingham.
“He is probably the most talented discus thrower both in physique and technique. It’s nice to have such rivals because we push each other forward – in some competitions he wins, in others I do. I think this duel will continue for a long time,” M. Alekna told LRT journalist Milda Vilikanskytė in Brussels.
However, in head-to-head encounters this season, the Lithuanian still leads K. Čeh 3:2.
Another meeting between them is expected next weekend in Vilnius.
“I am in excellent sporting form. And today (in the “Diamond League” final, – ed.) I haven’t shown everything I can,” K. Čeh told Slovenian TV RTV, also praising his rival.
– I have achieved the most important goals of this season. Moreover, I defeated (Mykolas) Alekna once again. He is an exceptional discus thrower, maintaining stable technique for many years.
It’s nice to compete with him because we motivate each other. We will meet again soon in Vilnius. I want to beat him on his home ground.”
The mayor’s cup tournament at Vingis Park Stadium will also feature Olympic champion Jamaican Roj Stone, who took third place in the “Diamond League” final.
