She spoke this way in a radio interview broadcast on Tuesday after the head of state stated that he would like to ask the Minister of Education whether she wants to solve problems or pretend to solve them.

The president emphasized that it is unacceptable for him to “look at education as a degrading system.” According to him, achievement standards should not be lowered.

As reported by BNS, last week the Seimas approved the president’s veto regarding the requirements for tenth-grade students to obtain basic education. It was decided that the minimum achievement threshold – a mandatory grade of four – will be applied from 2029.

R. Popovienė emphasized that the standards are not being lowered, as such requirements have never been in effect. According to her, the ministry’s decisions are focused on children’s success.

„I want to emphasize and stress that we are definitely not lowering the standards. The PUPP threshold has never existed,“ the minister said.

„For us, the ministry, academic achievements are really very important. That is what we aim for, but we want to find the best solutions when addressing the issue of achievement assessment so that thousands of children are not left behind and do not remain with only primary education,“ the politician said.

Currently, the PUPP is mandatory for all tenth graders, but its results have so far had no impact on promotion to a higher grade or obtaining an education certificate.

After the president’s veto is accepted, from September 2029, students who do not achieve the minimum grade of four will not obtain basic education.
