Where can Lithuanians extend their summer? Travel expert named directions for September, October, and November

“We often hear the question – where is it warm in autumn? But September 10th and November 10th are two completely different periods in terms of travel. In September, the choice is still huge, you can confidently look at Greece, Italy, or Spain. In November, if a person wants not just sun, but to swim and lie on the beach, the options are much fewer,” says Brigita Kučinskaitė, an expert from the “Travel Academy.”

No need to look far for summer in September

Those who can plan their holidays in September have the greatest choice. At this time, the summer season continues in Turkey, Greece, Cyprus, Tunisia, Southern Italy, and much of Spain.

Turkey remains one of the safest destinations for those wanting classic seaside holidays in September. In the Antalya region, daytime temperatures still reach about 32 degrees, and the sea water is about 27 degrees. Compared to July and August, the heat is easier to bear, but the beach season is far from over.

September is also a good time for Crete, Rhodes, or the Peloponnese, Cyprus, Tunisia. For those wanting more than just hotel relaxation, you can look at Sicily, Calabria, or Sardinia, as well as Malaga, Alicante, and Mallorca.

“If a person can choose, I often consider September an even more pleasant holiday month than August. The sea is warmed after summer, Southern Europe is still hot, but no longer so extreme. Also, there are more opportunities to find a good price,” says B. Kučinskaitė.

In October, it’s worth heading further south on the map

In October, the situation begins to change. The season in Greece and parts of Italy is coming to an end, so when planning holidays, just the country name is no longer enough – it is important to look at the specific region and travel dates.

“One of the most popular destinations remains the Antalya region of Turkey. In October, daytime temperatures here reach about 28 degrees, and the Mediterranean Sea is still about 24 degrees. However, the closer to the end of the month, the more the weather of the specific year matters,” says the expert.

According to her, summer lasts longer in Cyprus, and those looking for even more stable warmth should already look at Egypt. In southern Spain – Malaga, Alicante, and the Costa del Sol coast – October suits those who want to combine sun with cities, food, trips, and more active rest. Meanwhile, in Tenerife, the season is not tied to the Mediterranean summer rhythm at all, so the Canary Islands become increasingly relevant as winter approaches.

“In October, it is very important to understand what a person means by summer. If you want thirty degrees and to spend the whole week on the beach, I would choose Egypt. If pleasant warmth is enough, you want to rent a car, drive around, dine in the city – then Malaga or Cyprus can be perfect,” says the travel expert.

For November – Egypt and the Canary Islands

In November, the choice for those whose main goal is warmth becomes much clearer.

“One of the most reliable options is Egypt. From October to spring, the most comfortable season begins here, when the summer heat subsides, but beach holidays can still be planned at the Red Sea resorts.

Another option is the Canary Islands, including Tenerife. They are especially suitable for travelers who do not want to spend the whole week just in a hotel: on the island, you can combine beaches, hikes, towns, Teide National Park, and car trips,” says B. Kučinskaitė.

At the beginning of November, Cyprus, Tunisia, or Turkey can still be considered, but the expert recommends not to value them as highly as in September.

“You should no longer sell yourself the illusion that Turkey in November will be the same as Turkey in September. You can be very lucky with the weather, but there can also be rain, cooler evenings, and some seasonal hotel services will no longer operate. If a person says that warmth and swimming are essential, I would suggest not to take risks in November but to choose a destination where the season is definitely ongoing at that time,” says B. Kučinskaitė.

How much does a week of warmth cost in autumn?

Autumn travel prices depend heavily on the date, hotel category, meals, and chosen destination, but offers seen at the end of August show quite a wide selection.

For example, for September and October, a week’s stay in a 5-star hotel in Turkey with “ultra all-inclusive” offers can be found from about 600 euros per person. A week in Greece can start from about 570 euros, in Southern Italy from about 600 euros. These are not usual prices, but they do occur.

Travel to Tenerife in October with a flight can be found from about 770 euros per person, to Tunisia with “all-inclusive” from about 830 euros. In Egypt, a week’s stay in a 5-star hotel with “all-inclusive” or “ultra all-inclusive” options can be found from about 580 euros.

Malaga is currently not the cheapest package holiday destination – October week offers with flight, transfer, and breakfast and dinners can be found from about 900 euros per person. However, according to the expert, this destination is more often chosen not for the “all-inclusive” format but for the opportunity to combine seaside relaxation with Andalusian cities and independent trips.

Is it really cheaper in autumn?

B. Kučinskaitė emphasizes that there is no single rule for how much a trip should be cheaper in September or October. The price depends not only on the season but also on flight occupancy, hotel demand, the specific week, and the number of remaining places.

However, traveling outside school holidays and having the option to choose from several departure dates, the difference from the summer peak can be several or even dozens of percent.

“You should not expect that on September 1st all trips suddenly become a third cheaper. A good hotel can be expensive even in September. But if a person can travel not on Saturday but on Wednesday, choose not just one specific week and compare several hotels, there is much more room for a good offer in autumn,” says B. Kučinskaitė.

The expert also advises checking not only weather forecasts before booking holidays in late autumn. At the end of the season, some resorts may shorten hotel entertainment programs, some outdoor restaurants, water parks, or other seasonal services may no longer operate. Therefore, in October and November, it is important to evaluate not only the country and price but also the specific hotel.
