What are ticks?

Ticks belong to arachnids. They go through several developmental stages – a larva hatches from the egg, then develops into a nymph and an adult tick. Larvae have six legs, while nymphs and adult ticks have eight legs. To develop, ticks need to feed on the blood of animals or humans. Ticks themselves do not cause diseases, but some of them may be infected with viruses or bacteria and transmit infections to humans while feeding on their blood. In Europe, some of the most important tick-borne diseases are Lyme disease and tick-borne encephalitis.

How to recognize ticks?

What ticks look like depends on their developmental stage and whether they have already fed on blood. Nymphs can be very small and hard to notice, while adult ticks are larger. A tick that has attached and fed on blood swells, and its body becomes rounder.
