At the “El Rodeo I” prison, AFP journalists saw tears of joy as several former prisoners reunited with their families.

Some relatives have been camping near this prison close to the capital Caracas for several months, awaiting the possible release of their loved ones.

Ruth Molero, whose son and nephew remained locked up on Friday, said the release was unexpected for families.

Guards “started blowing whistles, and we (…) were sitting here chatting as we do every afternoon. Then we saw that small group of young people,” leaving the prison, R. Molero told AFP.

“Imagine – we all ran out screaming,” she said.

Although her family members were not released this time, “I know they will be out very soon,” the woman added.

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said this prisoner release is a “very important step in the nation’s reconciliation process.”

“Since January 3, 1,046 Venezuelans have been released,” he said.

The rights group Foro Penal, advocating for the release of alleged political prisoners, announced that six women were released, including one accused of involvement in a plot to assassinate N. Maduro.
