„The situation in Elektrėnai is not very good. Environmental pollution continues to this day, (hydrogen sulfide concentration – BNS) standards are still being exceeded, and looking at the official public information provided by VAATC itself (Vilnius County Waste Management Center – BNS), there were ten times as many exceedances just in July,“ G. Ratkevičius said on Wednesday at the Seimas Audit Committee.
„Yes, those exceedances are not as large as they were at the beginning of the year, when they were up to 24 times, now – up to four times, but those exceedances still remain, our municipality’s interest is that unprepared, unsuitable waste, which caused the crisis – environmental pollution – does not reach the regional landfill in the municipality,“ the mayor said.
He reminded that a state of emergency due to environmental pollution, the source of which is the landfill, is still declared in the municipality.

„The Environmental Protection Department had instructed VAATC to control the situation and eliminate environmental pollution exceedances by certain dates, later extended until June 10, this situation has not been fully resolved,“ added the mayor of Elektrėnai.
Elektrėnai municipality has asked the General Prosecutor’s Office to assess the legality of the decision to transport mixed municipal waste from the Vilnius region to the Kazokiškės landfill and its possible consequences.
