Officials of the Cantabria Red Cross have issued “yellow flag” warnings at several beaches, as more than 800 people were treated for very painful stings in July alone.
This alarming surge has caused great concern among vacationers, surfers, and families. The chaos is caused by the Portuguese man o’ war (Physalia physalis) – a notoriously infamous creature often mistaken for a jellyfish, capable of injecting strong venom through its long tentacles. The situation has also caused major disruptions in neighboring Basque Country, where yellow warning flags are also flying.
