Mixed municipal waste on Pramonės Street is being managed to eliminate the consequences of the fire that occurred last year at the Vilnius mixed municipal waste sorting (MBA) plant operated by the company “Energesman,” the AAD reported on Friday.

According to environmentalists, ESOC instructed “Ekonovus” to transport the collected mixed municipal waste for processing to a site in Naujoji Vilnia. It has a hard surface and measures to ensure that surface runoff does not enter surrounding areas.
On July 29, officials who conducted an inspection at the site found that the waste is being managed in compliance with requirements. Currently, AAD is also carrying out additional supervision activities related to wastewater management and ambient air pollution.
Residents’ complaints about noise and unpleasant odors are being forwarded for investigation to the National Public Health Center.
As BNS wrote, the Vilnius County Waste Management Center (VAATC), having agreed with three companies on waste sorting in the Vilnius region, one of which – “Ekonovus” – sorts waste in a rented area in Naujoji Vilnia.
This caused outrage among local residents, but the mayor of Vilnius, Valdas Benkunskas, says that the waste will be managed there temporarily – it should be gone within 5–8 weeks.

As BNS reported, “Ekonovus” CEO Romas Draskinis said that the company temporarily sorts waste from two zones of Vilnius city at the site on Pramonės Street, and it has the necessary permits for this.
According to him, the company plans to sort waste in Naujoji Vilnia for a maximum of two months and then move to its own site near Gariūnai, on Sandėlių Street, where preparatory infrastructure work is currently underway.
BNS wrote that VAATC has agreements on waste sorting with the companies “Ecoservice,” “Ekonovus,” and “Ekobazė.” The other two companies sort waste near Gariūnai.
The waste crisis in the Vilnius region arose due to last year’s fire at the Vilnius waste sorting plant, which has not yet resumed operations, and the reduction of waste incineration volumes at the Vilnius cogeneration plant.
