On July 16, Giorgio Voltolina, 24 years old, and his friend from Venice set off with just one euro. Their goal was to reach Palermo on time, where two friends’ graduation celebration was taking place. Together they aim to get to know Italy better and meet as many people as possible. They shared this with the Italian regional newspaper “Corriere dell’Umbria.”

Account balance – minus 25 euros
During volunteering in Asia, Giorgio spent all his money. His bank account was minus 25 euros. However, he did not want to give up the invitation to Sicily. Instead of buying a plane ticket, he decided to hitchhike across Italy.
To earn money on the trip, Giorgio and his friend used creative ideas. With the one euro they had, they bought paper and a pen, and wrote on a sign: “1 portrait = 1 euro.”
“The drawings, to be honest, were quite bad, but we relied on our charm and collected 13 euros,” said the 24-year-old, who, together with his friend, drew portraits of passersby on the street.

Additionally, both guys earned money from humorous performances. “We tell silly jokes for a voluntary donation. If people laugh, they give us something. If not – then no,” Giorgio told “Corriere dell’Umbria.”
Through Instagram, the friends also received offers for accommodation, rides, or shared lunches and dinners.
Especially in Umbria, they were impressed by the hospitality of the people, so they stayed in this region longer than planned. By August 1, both hope to reach Palermo.
“We have very little time, but that is exactly what makes this challenge even more interesting,” said Giorgio. “Any help is welcome. […] Even if someone just wants to meet us, we are very happy. Our real goal is to meet as many people as possible.”

You can travel cheaply without resorting to methods like these two Italians. A travel expert revealed to the British newspaper “The Sun” which destinations are most worthwhile at different times of the year and where travelers can find cheaper flights and hotels. Her recommendations are based on experience from about a dozen trips per year.
In winter, she recommends, among others, Senegal and Marrakech; in spring – Seville and Tokyo off-season. For summer, she suggests El Gouna in Egypt and Gothenburg; in autumn – Milan and Madrid; and for the end of the year – Lille and Copenhagen.
According to the expert, those who can flexibly choose travel dates and avoid the most in-demand weeks can save significantly.
