The number of nursing places in Kaunas will almost double: a huge expansion of K. Grinius Hospital begins

Breast and new harmony

Surrounded by a pine forest, at Raudonojo Kryžiaus St. 1, a four-story A++ energy-efficient treatment annex will be built. It will complement the Kazys Grinius nursing and supportive care hospital branch operating in Panemunė. The sanatorium built in 1932 for tuberculosis patients and the new building will be connected by a glass gallery. All valuable interwar building features and facades will be preserved during the works.

According to the designers’ and architects’ vision, the new building with laconic forms will not be visible from the main viewpoints – from the entrance from Raudonojo Kryžiaus Street and the southern side of the plot. The horizontal lines used in the facades will create an impression of calm, and the restrained material palette will not compete with the main historic building. The annex in the northern part of the plot will be covered and surrounded by vegetation.

During the project implementation, the environment will be arranged – it is planned to preserve existing greenery as much as possible and transplant some trees. About 85 sq. m of green roof is planned on the one-story annex part. A network of paths will be developed on the territory, terraces will be installed. The existing road will also be redesigned to adapt it for access to the new admission department, and parking lots will be arranged.

Project proposals prepared by UAB “Medstatyba” were presented to the public last November. Currently, the technical work project expertise is underway. It is expected to be available in September and the construction contract to be signed this year. If everything goes according to plan, construction work could be completed in November 2028. The value of the object built solely with municipal funds may reach about 11 million euros.

Service centralization

“Kaunas strategy – to increase the number of nursing and supportive care places and the accessibility of such services in Kaunas, near already operating institutions. With the new Panemunė building, we aim not only to create places for patients but also to organize nursing and supportive care services more efficiently.

By centralizing services, infrastructure and medical resources will be used more rationally, better conditions will be created for patients and employees. These are necessary conditions to ensure quality services and good working conditions,” says Kaunas Mayor Visvaldas Matijošaitis.

Expanding the Panemunė branch, it is planned to arrange 150 places for patients in the new building. This will increase the total number of nursing service places from 145 to almost 300. The premises will be adapted for long-term patient treatment and nursing – wards, nurses’ rooms, sanitary units, and showers are planned in the northern building.

The administration will be located in the connecting part of the building, auxiliary rooms, staff changing rooms, physiotherapy halls, and offices will be arranged. In the southern, one-story annex part, a patient reception will be installed.

Modern spaces adapted for treatment purposes are planned throughout the annex. Convenient movement between floors is ensured by installing a passenger elevator. Rooms, corridors, and passages are designed so that people with disabilities and patients with limited mobility can move comfortably.

Comprehensive development

The Panemunė project is part of the expansion of the Kazys Grinius nursing and supportive care hospital service network. Currently, the hospital branches in Kaunas have a total of 257 nursing places: 145 in Panemunė, 72 in Vičiūnai, and 40 in Petrašiūnai.

In autumn, the thoroughly reconstructed former Kulautuva children’s tuberculosis hospital-sanatorium building will be opened. It has been transferred to the K. Grinius nursing and supportive care hospital, fully equipped with furniture and necessary medical and other equipment.

There are 169 places arranged here: 133 for nursing and supportive care services, and another 36 for care services. This will be the first institution under city jurisdiction where medical nursing and social care functions will be combined under one roof.

The hospital is currently forming staff – looking for doctors, nurses, social workers, and other healthcare, administration, catering, and maintenance workers. All job announcements –kgriniausligonine.lt/karjera/.

After implementing the Panemunė and Kulautuva projects and opening for operation, the number of nursing places in Kaunas will increase from the current 257 to 540.
