Romanian director Radu Jude’s black comedy “Do Not Expect Too Much from the End of the World” is a stunningly playful and rage-filled critical essay. Angela (actress Ilinca Manolache) is an energetic, but almost exhausted production assistant. She works 16 hours a day, and in her free minutes, she comments on her surroundings through a fictional online character, a vulgar, uneducated, constantly swearing bald man. Speeding and arguing with other drivers, she drives around the city, looking for heroes for a work safety campaign, while revealing to viewers not only the deplorable state of Romanian roads, but also rampant corruption and inequality.

In the comedy “Second Act,” Florence (actress Léa Seydoux) is madly in love and eager to finally introduce her boyfriend David (actor Louis Garrel) to her father. But David is no longer interested in the demanding girl; he intends to introduce her to his friend Willy and escape the relationship. The four film characters find themselves in a secluded restaurant called “Second Act.” However, another layer soon intervenes – the film’s actors argue and analyze their roles in real-time, with the directing voice of artificial intelligence emanating from a computer. Provocateur Quentin Dupieux’s thirteenth film is a timely wit about still uncomfortable topics in the world of cinema, artistic creation, and its value.

The fantasy comedy “Empire” takes us to the Opal Coast in Northern France. Unusual events begin to unfold in a quiet fishing village: the birth of a special baby triggers a war between empires of good and evil from other planets. Lightsaber battles and explosions begin in the mundane coastal landscape, and a forbidden love story also develops. Director Bruno Dumont reinterprets the science fiction genre and creates a European version of “Star Wars,” offering not only a satirical vision of cosmic apocalypse but also commenting on the human condition of our times.
